Moisture Keeping Technology

  • Moisture locking formula with a creamy feel
  • Polyol-in-oil type emulsion base and lip cosmetic composition containing the same (patent no.10-1045219)

Lipstick, the most common makeup product is composed of nutrients, organic and non-water-soluble inorganic pigment evenly dispersed in oil such as animal and vegetable wax and ester oil for protection and hydration of the lips to keep them soft, smooth and hydrated.

The effect of forming an oil layer on the outer surface of the lips to trap moisture in the lips is known as the moisturizing effect and water-in-oil type emulsion lipsticks using surfactant have been developed to boost such an effect.

This water-in-oil emulsion lipstick prevents the evaporation of water (moisture) and keeps the lips smooth and soft. It also features an excellent, creamy, non-sticky texture.

Many different types of emulsifiers including glycerin, propylene glycol and water are used in water-in-oil emulsion lipstick to improve stability and moisturizing effect, and some products have had success in terms of an improved moisturizing effect.

However, due to their natural properties, ingredients used for moisturizing effect sometimes negatively affect the quality of the product.
For example, oil falls from lipstick as a result of poor compatibility between ingredients making it messy and water-soluble ingredients decrease the hardness of the stick, i.e., makes it easy to break, and emulsifiers used for the emulsification of water-soluble ingredients can cause skin irritation.

Our polyol-in-oil type emulsion base does not contain water, but moisturizing ingredients using polyhydric alcohol and lipstick ingredients are emulsified into P/O type. With silicone composed of silicone oil, silicone polymer and silicone emulsifier, it gives a creamy smooth texture.

It allows for only a minimal use of emulsifier, which has the potential to cause skin irritation, and because a stabilized emulsifier is mixed, lipstick can be made without any extra emulsification process. Plus, the content of moisturizing ingredients can be adjusted for intended purposes through the control of emulsion base content.

With this moisture keeping technology, our research lap was able to develop a lipstick that’s safe and does not fade while still providing an excellent moisturizing effect. This technology not only keeps the lips moisturized, but also delivers the nutrients to make rough dry lips smooth and healthy.
